778. The Battle of Roncesvalles

This is the exhibition that gives the Centre its name. It has been produced in collaboration with Xabier Irujo, from the Centre for Basque Studies at the University of Reno (Nevada, USA), who has recently carried out new research on the Battle.

Charlemagne’s rearguard, as it passed through the Pyrenees, was defeated in the ravines of Luzaide/Valcarlos by the Basques. That attack had a great impact and was sung about and remembered hundreds of times throughout the Middle Ages. Since then, legends and myths about this event, such as the famous ‘Chanson de Roland’’, have been known throughout Europe. And it still lives on today through studies, books, films and comics.

Today, Luzaide/Valcarlos has this exhibition centre, which explains to visitors the latest research into what happened in 778 with a completely new and pioneering exhibition. And, like the rest of the content, you can find out more about it through our Virtual Tour.
