Luzaide/Valcarlos has always been a cultural and historical link between Europe and the Iberian Peninsula. Its privileged location has made it a witness to the Roman Road of the Pyrenees, the legendary Battle of Roncevaux Pass, and the Way of Saint James.
Through this virtual tour, the Luzaide/Valcarlos Village Council wishes to showcase the «Exhibition Centre and Information Point 778. The Battle of Roncevaux Pass». A space where we can trace through time everything we know about that historic defeat suffered by Charlemagne’s troops, which would give rise to the Song of Roland (Chanson de Roland).
But the centre does not stop there, and it is undoubtedly the best place to learn about the rich historical and ethnographic heritage of this territory.
Come and visit our Exhibition Centre.
Explore each space, each object and each piece of content, step by step, at your own pace. Click on the objects that interest you to find out more, play their videos, listen to their voices, and more.
Above all, discover the enormous wealth that Luzaide/Valcarlos has to offer.
The Battle of Roncesvalles
«The Basques, ambushed at the summit of the mountain, descended from above and pushed the column escorting the impedimenta at the rear of the march into the ravine, causing the men to plunge into the valley below. They engaged in combat and killed every last one of them».

The Bolantes
The Valcarlos dances have been listed as an Intangible Asset of Cultural Interest in Navarre since 2012. The varied characters, their elegant costumes and the beauty of their dances make them our most representative icon. Would you like to learn more about them?
Visit our traditional kitchen
For many, many years, these objects were used, especially by women, in homes throughout the valley. With the help of the Aranzadi Science Society, and thanks to the residents who have donated them, today we can appreciate the rich traditional ethnographic heritage of Valcarlos.
