Luzaide/Valcarlos: The first stop on the Camino

An open door and a welcoming place for walkers entering the Peninsula, Luzaide/Valcarlos has been a privileged stop on the Way of Saint James since ancient times. Today, thanks to its strategic location between Donibane Garazi/San Juan Pie de Puerto and Orrega/Roncesvalles, and its numerous services, Luzaide/Valcarlos is a key point on the Way of Saint James.

Once across the border, Luzaide/Valcarlos is the first municipality in Upper Navarre that pilgrims encounter. Traditionally, there are two variants of the Way, and both pass through Luzaide/Valcarlos. Today, for safety reasons, it is recommended to always use the Lower Way or the gorge. This route remains open all year round, unlike the ‘Camino Alto’ (Upper Way), which closes in winter. This variant is therefore safer.
